To Be Horse Crazy

Goodbye

Horses. I really did not want to be near them. At all. But, I had no choice. I had to be around them. I’m glad that I didn’t have a choice, otherwise I wouldn’t be as horse-crazy as I am today.

“Lizzy!!” mom called from the garden.

Ugh! Right when I’m in the middle of doing something! Lizzy thought as she ran to the garden.

“Lizzy, we will be staying at a horse farm for the next two weeks. And we’re all going. So start packing and get ready to get dirty!” mom told her.

“But mom! I don’t want to go to some stinky horse farm!” Lizzy wined.

“Fine, then I’m taking your phone for the week too.” Mom said no more after that. Then Lizzy stomped to her room and started packing.

This is going to be a long week. Lizzy thought to herself with a sigh.

* * *

The next day, they hit the road and drove an hour away for a week around horses.

“I see it! We’re here! Lizzy look!!” Lizzy’s seven year-old brother, Jack, said excitedly.

Lizzy got out of the car and saw a horse in the pasture run over to her. “Hi?” Lizzy said. The horse sniffed her, snorted, and walked away. “Nice to meet you too,” she mumbled.

Lizzy then went and got her stuff out of the car. She bumped into some guy who looked around the same age as her, if not older. “Oops! Sorry,” Lizzy said and dropped one of her bags.

“No, I’m sorry,” he said while picking up the dropped bag. He handed it to her and led the whole family to where they would be staying.

He stopped at Lizzy’s room and said, “This will be your room.”

Lizzy looked in and saw horse bedding and horses on the walls. Horses were everywhere! She thanked him and tried to smile, but with this room she didn’t know how she would survive. AND, I have the best view of the horses out the window?!! Lizzy thought.

Worst. Week. Ever.

Lizzy set up her room how she wanted it and went with mom to the stable. “Mom? Do we have to ride these horses?” Lizzy asked once they entered the stable.

“Yes, at least once. We will go on a trail ride tomorrow morning. Do you want to come to that?” mom asked her.

“Sure… I guess,” Lizzy said, not so surely.

“Which horse would you like to ride?” mom asked.

“I don’t know… How about… that one?” Lizzy replied.

“That’s Beauty. She sure is beautiful, isn’t she?”Mom explained. Lizzy shrugged and walked over to Beauty’s stall.

“She is sweet,” Lizzy said while softening towards riding her. Lizzy petted her a little, and caught up with mom. Then they went inside and got ready to go to bed.

Mom walked into Lizzy’s room to check on her. She looked around the room with all the horses and laughed. “This is the exact opposite of your room at home!” mom said.

“I know. But it doesn’t mean that I wanted this room,” Lizzy answered.

Mom said goodnight and turned off the lights. Lizzy thought about Beauty. “I guess it won’t be that bad riding a horse,” Lizzy said as she fell asleep.

* * *

“Lizzy! Get up! It’s almost time for the trail ride!” mom called to Lizzy.

Lizzy sat up and moaned. She stepped out of bed and got dressed. She slipped her new riding boots on, then ran downstairs, ate breakfast, and went to the stable.

“Go tack up Beauty now,” Mom said.

“Okay… but I don’t know how,” Lizzy said.

“Ryan, could you please go help Lizzy tack up?” mom said to the guy Lizzy bumped into yesterday.

“Yeah, I’ll be right over,” he replied.

After a minute, he came over to Lizzy with a saddle and a bridle. “First, you need to put the saddle blanket on,” Ryan said while handing it to her.

Lizzy placed it on Beauty. Then he handed her the Western saddle and said to place it on the saddle blanket. Then he helped put on the bridle. “Then you’re done!” he said.

“Thanks,” Lizzy said. Then he walked over to Jack, who needed help tacking up too. Lizzy then led Beauty out by mom and waited for Jack.

Once he was ready, mom helped Lizzy mount. “First take your left foot and place it in the stirrup,” mom said. After Lizzy did, mom said, “Now swing your body up and onto the horse. Then once you’re up there, put your right foot into the other stirrup.”

“That all?” Lizzy asked.

“Yup! It’s pretty easy!” mom replied. “Just make sure you are holding the reins right. We are neck reining remember, okay?” mom added.

“Okay,” Lizzy answered. Then they were off.

“Mom? How long is the trail ride going to be?” Jack asked after a while of riding.

“Probably only a half hour to forty-five minutes,” Mom answered.

“ONLY?! That’s a long time to me!” Lizzy blurted out.

“I’ve been on longer,” mom said.

Lizzy didn’t say another word and kept on riding.

This is actually kinda fun! Lizzy thought, about half way through the trail ride.

The ride was coming to a close when Jack said, “Can we keep going mom? Please?!”

Mom looked over at Lizzy who didn’t say a thing and said, “Maybe tomorrow. Lizzy? Are you going to come with us tomorrow?”

Lizzy looked at her and said, “Sure! This is actually fun! But it’s only fun because of Beauty.” Lizzy gave Beauty a pat on the shoulder.

They were back at the farm. Lizzy dismounted and pet Beauty for doing such a good job.

“I love you Beauty,” Lizzy said to her. Then she untacked her and gave her a carrot.

“Hey Lizzy! Now do you like horses?” Ryan asked.

“Like them? No—I love them!”

And that is how I became horse crazy. I love Beauty. She is a very important part of this story. I could not have ridden a horse without her.
