Dreamy Horse

by WhinnyLove, age 12

Hi everyone! My name is WhinnyLove. I’ve been creating and publishing stories on here for a little while, but never have I properly introduced myself.

My real name is Chloe, and I’m twelve years old going on thirteen. I have been riding horses for almost three years now, and my interest has never wavered. I enjoy every moment I spend with horses, and I just want to tell you a little bit of my backstory.

As you all know, Love is my favorite horse, and she is also a very best friend. The first best friend I ever had, and the best friend that I’ll always have. I have a few other close human friends, but none will be as dear as Love. You all know how I met her in one story, but how I came to actually meeting her is different.

I met her owners about four years ago when I was with my dad. We went to this little gathering that takes place once a year that teaches about when the Spanish first came to America. I went because my dad wanted me too, plus he said there were horses, so that was a bonus.

We listened to a guy speaking and watched a short video before taking a hay ride to a little building that was basically a roof with no walls. The horses weren’t there yet, so everyone went out looking for ancient relics buried in the sand. I found a big piece of pottery with a swirly pattern all over it. The horses came and I was right next to them—petting them, feeding them treats, and all that good stuff.

Soon, it was time for lunch, so we went back to a big church building. They had lunch in there and everything. Me and my dad had just gotten ours and had just sat down when, by chance, the people with the horses sat at our table. Well everyone started talking, and I was having an awesome time. We eventually had to go, and the horse people gave us their card. At home, I was overexcited about meeting them, and later that night my mom called them.

Later, we went to the ranch for a little party-like-thing. It wasn’t exactly a party. It was awesome! There were horses everywhere! I felt like I was in heaven. I got to ride on a horse called Nina, and I saw one of the horse people go over a jump. I asked her what it felt like, she said, “It felt like flying.” Little did I know, I would soon know what she meant. We left that evening, and I went home super excited.

Now, before I continue, I just want to say that was the day I first met Love. She was in a a small round corral with her mother, and I gave her cookies. A few months later, I found myself meeting the trainer for the first time. He let me choose between Love and Nina. I chose Love (because at this point I was obsessed with an animated horse movie called Spirit) and that was the first day of my awesome adventure.

Love and I have learned and been through so much together so that when, for whatever reason, I had to ride Nina, whether it be for a horse’s hurt leg or because I was getting really advanced in riding, I always felt really scared and small. Whenever I’m on the back of my best friend, I always feel more confident. My favorite part of the riding days is when I’m done riding and Love is put in the paddock. I spend a long time sitting with her in the paddock, petting her and talking to her, and I feel she can understand me.

Before I stop, I want to say my life has been almost like a dream come true. I’ve always wanted horses, and I got them. I just want to thank Love for being the best friend I could ever have. And I want to thank my other friends and my family for loving me and supporting me in my riding.

And now I want to thank GHC, for letting me write about my favorite horse and about my friends. Thank you everyone!

Publisher’s Note: THANK YOU WhinnyLove for contributing to GHC, both as a writer and kind supporter of everyone who comes and goes through our virtual barn. Serendipitously, your first post was in 2013—around the same time you started riding!

  1. I’ve read quite a lot of your work, WhinnyLove, that is, Chloe- and they’re all great! Even the name of your horse is great. You’re a great writer, and I wish I could be like you, but that will never be as long as I’m not allowed to own a horse. My parents won’t let me.

  2. Wow you have watched the movie Spirit? I LOVE it, and it usually makes me cry because of how Spirit misses his herd and stuff like that, and how he has formed a friendship with a human. I’m glad I got the chance to know you, WhinnyLove/Chloe!
