Blogfest #3: Expect the Unexpected

One thing you always have to remember with horses is to expect the unexpected. I learned this the hard way…

Five years ago, my best friend introduced me to the first horse I had ever seen. Sure, he was a little bony and aging, but he was beautiful — if not in body, in spirit. He had been abused and starved so my friend was taking care of him. Flex, the horse, had been doing very well and was itching to go out for a ride. We both climbed on his back and started riding slowly.

Well, Flex did NOT want to walk! He broke into a brisk trot. When you have hardly ever ridden a horse before, have no saddle for comfort, and don’t think the person you are clutching in front of you can control her horse, you get scared. At least, I did! As if that weren’t enough, my friend muttered, “Allison, hold on!” To some people, that might seem comforting. Aww, my friend cares about what could happen to me. She’ll be careful. As if my eyes weren’t screaming it at me loud enough, these words shouted, “There is a giant log ahead and we are headed right for it!”

The reasonable side of me took over. Come on, Allison, Flex is old. He can’t jump it. Anyway, I bet he’s never jumped in his life. He was once one of the horses you see at carnivals giving pony rides. They don’t teach those horses to jump, I’m sure!

Well, expect the unexpected. Flex’s front feet soared over that log like it was nothing. For the record, I did not fall off. Neither did my friend. We were a bit shaken, but ended up laughing.

To this day, I don’t think anyone believes the story about this truly unexpected jump.
