Equestrian Drill Team

Have you ever seen or heard of a drill team? Ever wanted to be on one? Drill is a fun way to meet new people and be close to your horse! It’s so much fun and you can travel to rodeos, do parades, and even go to competitions!

Wikipedia says: An equestrian drill team is a group of horses and riders performing choreographed maneuvers to music. Teams typically perform at rodeos, horse fairs, parades, benefits, and drill team competitions. Drill teams are intended to entertain, show sportsmanship, horsemanship, team work and dedication.

Equestrian Drill TeamI live for the thrill of the drill, whether it’s suicide passes, figure eights, or wagon wheels — I live for it all. I have been part of the Freedom Riders Drill Team for 3 1/2 years now. It is soooo much fun and I have gained a stronger bond with my American Quarter Horse named Blue. I have made new friends and gone to at least 20 plus rodeos and parades. Being part of the team has taught me responsibility and has helped me teach the newbies what to do. I have learned about spacing, tracking, and lead changes. I have learned a lot about hard work and that practice pays off. It’s so much fun!

If you are interested in watching a drill team go to YouTube and look up equestrian drill teams or Red Dirt Ride. If you are interested in joinig one, look around your state and ask a local organization such as 4-H or FFA. Or you could probably even start your own.
