Lend a Hand

We all know you can teach horses, but did you know horses can teach you?

In inner-city Philadelphia, Lezlie Hiner, knows just what I mean. She started the Work to Ride program for kids in a low income, urban neighborhood. Kids can learn to play polo and take care of horses if they try in school and help with the horses. These kids, who may have been destined to follow in the footsteps of an older brother or father and become a gang member, now have a second chance to have a better life. According to Lezlie Hiner, “At the stables, they learn about responsibility, discipline, hard work, and compassion. You just have to hope that carries to their life outside the stables.”

Inner-city kids from Washington DC also got to experience horses. As they watched a blacksmith demonstration (shoeing) and watched a riding demonstration. “–we want to help expand these kids’ minds, show them that there is another world outside the city – I think that happened,” said Keith Early, whose farm this event took place on.

There are many example of horses changing someone’s life. Horses can determine what path you choose in life and even where you live. However, it is probably safe to say horses will never change you in a bad way.

  1. That woman is amazing! She’s changing the world with horses! Just like in the stories!

  2. I used to work with someone who does the same thing. She does the work to ride and other stuff to like a camp for inner city kids.
