For the Love of New Life

HoganSpring is right around corner at the barn, and with it new life. On March 6, 2009, a sturdy and rambunctious Quarter Horse colt came kicking into the world. Being one of the healthiest and strongest colts born to the farm, he was stable named Hogan after the actor who played Hawk.

Now a week old, Hogan is kicking up his heels and sprinting around the arena after his ever-patient mother. Just the other day when we put his mother, Jesse, back into her stall Hogan refused to follow. The ornery little bloke just would not submit to being brought in! We finally had to bribe him by meeting his mother and making him follow.

HoganIn a couple weeks, our gray Mare is supposed to be due for foaling, but she does not seem in a hurry. We have a video camera set up in the corner of the foaling stall because most births occur in the evening or at night. I tell you it is a lifetime experience to watch as the colt’s front legs come out and then its head, followed by the rest of the body. It is amazing to see God’s creation, a perfect image of a little horse. As long as it takes the mares to birth, you cannot even begin to imagine how much struggle and patience is involved.

Do not take life for granted. Make each and every day special with those you care about. Spring has sprung and the work springs up like weeds with it. Up next, shedding season… oh, the joy of brushing mounds of horsehair.
