Nightmare: Chapter 16

After a lengthy and heated discussion involving a lot of yelling between Jan and Professor Neron (who had a very large lung capacity, it seemed) it was decided that the best place to find a herd for Ava would be somewhere in the Kaialarnii mountains, which where only a two-days walk away, and that the Professor would accompany them, as well as his apprentices, Duncan and Maria. They would leave in two days.

Duncan was wiry, brown haired and thin. His personality could be summed up in six words: out-going, talkative, hyper-active and happy. He was thirteen, and was studying life-forms and herbology with Professor Neron.

Maria was dark-haired and quiet, about fifteen. She was studying literature and healing with the professor. She wore plain dresses of dark brown or burgandy, and rarely talked. Fiala spent most of the next two days with Maria. The two of them would brush Ava, and take her out after dark to fly around outside the city. The first night they accidentally got themselves locked out overnight, and were both severely scolded by the professor and Jan.

The morning of Fiala’s third day in Stargate dawned hot and muggy. Fiala groaned, unwilling to leave her bed. The sun was barely up, but she could tell it would be a heavy, sweltering-hot day. The thought of marching up mountains during the heat of midday did not appeal to her in the slightest.

Despite her misgivings (to put it gently) she forced herself to troop downstairs to the inn’s common room for breakfast, discretely tacking a note to Evan’s door: DO NOT DISTURB THE OGRE, on her way by.

Jan and Bain had already packed their bags and placed them by the door, and ordered her to do the same. Grumbling slightly, Fiala stomped back to her room and practically threw her bags down the stairs and hurled them unkindly into the corner. She did not get along well with lack of sleep and over-heating.
