Finally they reached the alpine meadows of the Kaialarnii mountains. Now it was only a matter of finding a herd of the Nightmares. Fiala tried to keep herself from being sad about the thought of saying goodbye to Ava, without success. She spent extra time brushing her every night, and braided her long mane and tail daily, only to pull it out again once they hit the road.

“Look! Look!” the professor screeched, dancing excitedly by the side of the trail.

Fiala patiently led Ava over and looked down to where he was pointing. She could see a creature had feasted on the ferns along the trail, leaving jagged edges from its pointed teeth. “Nightmares have been here!” Professor Neron crowed.

Ava stretched her neck forward and snuffled the ferns curiously, then took a large bite for herself.

“This could have been from ages ago—” Evan objected.

“No no no!!” the professor stamped his foot angrily. “The edges of these leaves are freshly cut, silly boy. These are from today. If we go quickly and quietly we could find them by this afternoon!”
