Nightmare: Chapter 19

Fiala wandered along miserably. She ignored the birdsong and even the wildflowers. Afternoon came all too quickly. Ava abruptly lifted her nose and whinnied enthusiastically. A chorus of answers drifted back on the wind.

“There they are!” Professor Neron squealed needlessly. The herd of Nightmares was grazing in a nearby meadow, their metallic black coats glittering like sculptures of black diamonds.

Everything else forgotten, Ava turned her head back and forth excitedly and raised her tail high.

Fiala couldn’t help but feel forgotten, and smiled bitterly at the irony. At first Ava wouldn’t leave her side, and Fiala was the one trying to find a new home for her, and now it was the other way around. She patted Ava’s neck sadly and shooed her away. Ava bolted, and leaped into the air.

“Bye, Ava!” said Fiala quietly.

The entire herd lifted into the air, circled once and disappeared over the top of the

“Now we’re never going to see them!!” the professor sputtered.

Fiala smiled grimly at the prospect of listening to Professor Neron’s grouching the entire trip back to Stargate.
