Resting Place for Ponies

Fforest Uchaf Farm has long sat on a hill, watching the hustle and bustle of life in the valley below. But it is a serene resting place away from the world for abused horses and ponies who need a little love. Some of the most amazing residents are the pit ponies, little ponies who worked hard pulling coal carts in the mines.

Two of the pit ponies there are Blackie and Steele. When Blackie and Steele came to the sanctuary, they were tired and covered with coal dust because they came straight from the pit. Steele had a respiration problem because of the coal dust, and Blackie had not had a certificate for part of the time he worked. The certificate he did have had “reservations about his health” according to the sanctuary. The investigation following this showed the veterinarian had a false picture of the work Blackie was doing! However, the vet would not show the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) how easy it is to give an unfit horse an annual certificate. The HSE, despite the many letters from the sanctuary, still claim “there is no evidence of maltreatment”.

If you want to help these ponies, visit one or both of these websites:

Sponsor a Pony
Donate to the Pit Pony Sanctuary

People can go visit the ponies and see other wildlife around the shelter. You might find yourself crying when you learn about some of the cruelty some of these horses and ponies have experienced. You will also be happy when you hear how these ponies got a second chance.
