Riding Free

When I ride, I take freedom,
When I try to fly, I soar.
When we gallop, I hear a bass drum,
When I get off, I want more.
I am riding free.

I feel the wind against my cheeks,
I hear the howling breeze.
I can see the mountain peaks,
That are surrounded by many trees.
I am riding free.

My paint horse is like a Picasso painting,
Her colors shine when we ride.
When I look at her, I think of our training,
And how it makes her glide.
I am riding free.

The design on her body is one-of-a-kind,
The way she gallops looks like she’s wild.
She’s always on my windswept mind,
And sometimes I think of her as a reckless child.
I am riding free.

As I get on her, I think of me,
And how we are like one.
As we ride, I start to feel free,
And no matter what happens, it’s never done.
We are riding free.

  1. That is a really good poem, I wish I could write that well.

  2. Oh, yeah. I wish my writings would get published. My writings haven’t been published for some strange reason. Good poem, by the way!

  3. @WhinnyLove, thanks for your interest in GHC! We haven’t been keeping up with submissions lately, but hope to feature more writing — from a variety of authors — moving forward. See the submission guide for details.

Please use the contact form, linked at the bottom of the page, if you have additional questions or comments for the GHC editors. Thanks!

  4. Thanks guys! You are really sweet! I came upon this website and I immediately wanted to submit something. I wrote this poem with all my heart and soul. I submitted it and it took many weeks and I had no hope! I was about to just give up and submit something else, when I came upon my work today and saw that it was published! I was so happy and my smile was everything. Not to mention that two people had read it and gave me comments that they liked it! Thank you so much!!!
