Tag, You’re It

Published by • Mar 22nd, 2009 • Category: How It's Made, LeadMare Tales

WARNING: If geekiness is not your thing, now would be the time to graze elsewhere. But if you don’t mind a taste of tech and are interested in learning how to spiff up your submissions, read on.

You’ve probably noticed this on the submission form:

Allowable Tags: <p><b><strong><em><u><blockquote>

Those are called HTML tags. Tags are a code that allows you to add formatting to text. Here’s what the tags do:

<p> = paragraph (inserts a line break between blocks of text)
<b> or <strong> = bold text
<em> = italic text
<u> = underline text
<blockquote> = indent and frame text (like this block of text)

HTML tags work like bookends. Each of the tags above are the left bookend that defines the start of that particular style of text. The right bookend is a closing tag. The closing tag looks almost identical, except it has a forward slash after the left bracket. For example…

</p> = end paragraph
</b> or </strong> = end bold text
</em> = end italic text
</u> = end underline text
</blockquote> = end indented/framed text

Below is a sample paragraph followed by the HTML code used to define the style of the paragraph.

Solitude

There is comfort and freedom in solitude, in sitting boldly atop her strong mount, taking in that moment of inertia under the trees, looking out at the expanse of green and blue surrounding her island of imagination. She closes her eyes, breathing in to fill her mind with images and adventures.

Exhaling slowly, her fingers take hold of the silky black mane. Her body melts deep into the sway, sending a signal that unleashes the power beneath. With a smooth, swift action, they take off, galloping across the expanse.

<u>Solitude</u>

There is comfort and freedom in solitude, in sitting <b>boldly</b> atop her <strong>strong</strong> mount, taking in that moment of inertia under the trees, looking out at the expanse of green and blue surrounding her island of imagination. She closes her eyes, breathing in to fill her mind with images and adventures.

Exhaling slowly, her fingers take hold of the silky black mane. Her body melts deep into the sway, sending a signal that unleashes the power beneath. With a smooth, swift action, they <em>take off,</em> galloping across the expanse.

The submission form now has a Preview button to the left of the SUBMIT button. Simply hit the Preview button then scroll to the top of the screen to see how your submissions looks.

I hope this starter guide helps explain the basics of HTML for adding formatting to your horse tales. Have FUN!

  3. I have always wondered how to do that!

  4. Wild’n’Free, thanks for showing everyone that tags also work in comments.

  5. I didn’t know if that would work — guess it does!

  6. That’s really cool!

  7. I never knew we could use tags in our submissions and comments. I guess you learn something new everyday.

Thanks LeadMare for this awesome blog!

  9. That’s neat!

  10. I only knew bold, italics and underline so thanks!!! And I didn’t know about the /, which is probably why when I use tags it always comes out with them in lol.
    Thanks!!!

  11. Believe me I’m no computer whiz but I can understand this! Its amazing!

  12. THANKS A MILLION!

  13. Is there a way to put pictures in your blog and submit them?

  14. Thanks for the information. :)

  15. Stargazer, you can submit pictures you’ve taken (or that you have the rights to use), to go with your blog or to post in the gallery, by using the email link below. I’ll also look into adding something to the JB submission form that allows you to include images with your submission.

  16. I LOVE THIS BLOG!!!! Thank you so much Lead Mare! Thank you So Eternally Much! You see I once had a list of these and then I lost it! Thank you! Thank you!

  17. I didn’t know where else to ask this but, is the “magazine” where you can buy T-shirts and stuff coming back to GHC? I just remembered it and was wondering..:)
Sorry if the question is a bit random;D

  18. I’maCowgirl, do you mean the catalog that had an Amazon and t-shirt store? If so, it can come back, but I didn’t think that was a hugely popular area. I’ve been doing some research into a new store where you can create your own t-shirt by picking the design then choosing from different shirt styles, colors, etc. Haven’t found the perfect solution yet, but it’s one of many projects germinating behind-the-scenes.

BTW, I like your new name!

  19. Ok. Didn’t know that!
    Thanks LeadMare!

  20. I’m trying out the tags thanks for making this so easy to understand Leadmare there’s a reason we all love you!

  21. I think that it would be fun to have a design-your-own t-shirt area of the site. I don’t think it was very popular because it was kind of hard to find. At least it took me a while. I think that if we had a contest to design a shirt for that area, it would become much more popular.

  22. Wow Rachel Danielle, I’m glad you’re having fun with html tags! :) You may know this, but you can also ‘nest’ tags. So if you want something to be bold and italic you just put the bold tags inside the italic tags, or vice verse.

Allison, a t-shirt design contest is a GREAT idea!

  23. Oh yes Whoo hoo! drawing contest or graphic contest is a CHAMPION idea! lol. Good job Ali. Where would you sell them at LeadMare when they were finished?
    ~HF

  24. Hay HorseFeathers. We actually have a store that used to be linked into GHC (click here) but I haven’t gotten around to re-linking because I want to make improvements.

If we have a contest and sell the winning design(s) we would need to decide what happens to the profits. That’s a bit complicated, but we’ll get on that horse when the time comes… ;)

  25. this is a bit soon but i think we should maybe donate them to the wildlife horse fun.. BLM.. or another organization that helps support wild horses. =0) Or we could give it to cancer research..and so on. Just a few ideas
    ~HF

  26. OH one more thang… how did you design the other logos.. do you have a type of computer softwere?
    ~HF

  27. I’m already guessing what we could do with a designing contest. We could sell them and use the money for horse charity! There are tons of horses that need help. *Brain racing and going to wild imagination work* we could educate people about horse slaughter and tell them that by buying this t-shirt they are helping to save a horse that otherwise would have been destroyed! Oh, and yes Lead Mare I’m really enjoying the tags. And I’m going a bit crazy with them!

  28. Sound like a good idea to me! And as for where the profits go could we give them to the Humane Society or an organization like that?

  29. LeadMare, I have a(nother) question; Can you submit drawings/pictures to go with your stories? It would be kinda cool…:)
    Thanks!

  30. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I thats kinda cool

  31. I’maCowgirl… yes you can subit pics to go along with blogs… i have for a couple of mine. You just have to send them to Leadmare in a email
