This Summer That I Had

This summer wasn’t perfect, and yet it wasn’t bad.
It didn’t leave me laughing, and yet I feel so glad.

I rode every day, two weeks straight,
And then I didn’t ride again, but to do so I must wait.

But in those two weeks, ever precious to me,
I cantered for the first time, and felt eternally free.

At the barn for the handicapped, I volunteered about.
I spent some time with horses, and that’s what I think counts.

Some people cannot understand why I like to clean stalls,
And all I can think to say is that that’s not it at all.

For all the time I had left, I holed right up to read.
To steal entry to a world of rebel mares and noble steeds.

This summer wasn’t perfect, and yet it wasn’t bad.
It taught me to treasure horses, this summer that I had.
